Some films spend millions of dollars on set production to create a fictional town, like The Shire in Lord of the Rings. Or spend millions to rent and decorate a colossal mansion, like Iron Man's 11,000 square foot estate. 

Have you ever wondered what happened to these properties in famous movies after cameras stop rolling? Let's explore the history and current condition of 10 properties made famous from film. 
Hobbiton
Lord of the Rings fans can tour the set of Hobbiton. For more information visit Hobbiton Tours Website.

  • Located in Matamata, New Zealand off of Buckland Rd. Many of the buildings from the film are still standing. A main attraction to Matamata is to tour the Hobbiton Movie Set (AKA The Shire).
  • Originally bought in 1978 by the Alexander family as a farm, this 1,200 acre property was home to 13,000 sheep and 300 angus beef cattle.
  • In 1999 they built 37 hobbit hole facades on the property for filming of Lord of the Rings.

  • Frances' (Diane Lane) falls in love with this Italian villa and renovates the home in Under the Tuscan Sun. In reality the filmmakers didn't renovate the property, just cleaned it up a bit and shot the after renovation scenes in warmer lighting.
  • In 2006 Villa Laura went under extensive renovation and is now available for vacation rentals.

  • ​12 Picket Post Close (AKA) 4 Privet Drive was used for the Dursley's home for the 1st & 5th Harry Potter movies.
  • Residents of Picket Post Close were paid for the inconvenience of filming on their street.
  • They decided for the second film that it would be easier and less costly to build a permanent 4 Privet Drive set at Leavesden Studio.

  • The McCallister's 4,250 sq. ft. Georgian home from Home Alone was listed at 2.4 million in 2011.
  • According to moviefone.com, "The filmmakers specifically wanted a red brick Georgian style house with a central staircase, and 671 Lincoln Avenue in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka fit the bill.
  • All exteriors and some interior shots -- including the kitchen, main staircase (which Kevin sleds down) and windowed first-floor landing -- are of the actual house."

  • Holly Golightly's apartment off E. 71st St. in Manhattan was only used for exterior shots in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
  • The interior scenes were shot at a Hollywood Studio.
  • This multi-family home was built in 1910 it is 2,800 sq.ft.
  • The Manhattan property is now worth over 4 million dollars.

  • Mikey's home from the Goonies is in Astoria, Oregon.
  • In the 1980's Astoria declared June 7th Goonies Day.
  • The current owners have lived there for over 15 years and are sick of fans of the movie gawking at their house and doing the Truffle Shuffle in the front yard everyday.
  • They have no trespassing signs posted all over the property.
  • They have went to great lengths to keep their privacy by putting tarps up to cover the house.

  • Tony Stark's huge mansion is 11,000 sq. ft. and called Razor.
  • Razor is built into a cliff above Blacks Beach in La Jolla, California.
  • It was designed by Wallace Cunningham, who has been ranked in the top 100 designers by Architectural Digest.
  • It was listed in 2014 for $39 million, but sold for $14 million.

  • Cameron Frye's 4,300 sq. ft. home from Ferris Bueller's Day Off was built in the 1953.
  • An additional matching building was put in in 1974.
  • The 2nd building was used to display cars. It has a 4 car garage with living space and a kitchen.
  • The home sold in 2014 for $1.06 million.

  • The Hoke House is 4,300 sq. ft.
  • Built in '07 for Nike's Director of Design, producers dubbed the property as "The Nike House" while filming.
  • The owners liked the idea that an elite family of vampires would live in a home like theirs and they allowed interior and exterior filming of the house for the movie.

  • This Georgian style home Noah restored for Allie in The Notebook was built in 1772 on Wadamalaw Island, SC.
  • The property is privately owned it has 4 porches that look out onto beautiful views of magnolia trees, Spanish moss, and the water.
  • Although this property is private, Notebook fans can tour Boone Hall Plantation, Allie's Family's summer home in the movie.​
